Plastic Caps and Closures - The European Market 2019

Date of publication: June 2019

This is the 5th edition of AMI Consulting’s report on plastic caps and closures.  The report covers EU-28+3 and provides a comprehensive analysis of the caps and closures market by end use application and closure types for 2007-18, with 5-year forecast.

Background:

The European plastic caps & closures industry is about the undergo a major step change in light of the new Single Use Plastics directive, which includes the handling of caps in a circular economy.

While the tethered caps standard has not yet been formalised, the industry is already actively reviewing and creating solutions that can offer regulatory compliance – from adjustment of tamper evidence band scoring through to brand-new bottle neck + cap designs concepts.

The new regulation is intended to reduce littering, but inadvertently it will likely stir the demand for virgin polymers thus compromising industry’s committed efforts to lightweight. AMI’s new Plastic Caps and Closures study will contextualise the new industry challenges and quantify the impact of the changing regulations over demand.

In the evolving caps & closures industry in Europe technological advances are critically important. To protect and grow profitability caps & closures producers have to innovate. Product and system developments at several levels of the supply-chain aim to address changing needs. This helps increase competitive forces on the one hand and ultimately drives market growth and creates opportunities for well organised plastic closure manufacturers. Good organic growth of several market segments and a change in packaging trends remain the key drivers of demand for plastic caps & closures.

In the last couple of years growth prospects have improved in tandem with the economic recovery. There is increased demand for added value and premium plastic caps & closures in several market segments. Brand owners are looking at the full packaging solution of their products in which the role of closures is increasingly valued to improve product differentiation, aesthetics and functionality.

This report is intended to assist industry participants and investors in anticipating change, formulating response strategies and directing R&D investment.  The datasets and market context explained in this study will help the industry participants in building strategies, exploit business opportunities and manage threats.
