Engineering Texas 2017, took place June 6-7 at the
Hilton Houston Post Oak. This two-day program examined the
latest developments in the use of non-metallic materials in the harsh
conditions of oil and gas drilling and transportation, including new
challenges arising in unconventional gas reservoirs.
The US is a leading player in oil and gas production. Due to the low
global oil price, margins are tight across the industry and
operators are looking to
improve efficiency and lower costs. Selecting the right materials for
vital components is a key element in reducing maintenance and maintaining
long-term performance; failure is expensive. Polymer materials (thermoplastics, elastomers, thermoset and composite materials)
are essential to the function and integrity of many structures including
risers, umbilicals, cables, chemical and corrosion-resistant coatings in
steel structures, pipelines, seals, Christmas trees, platforms,
pumps, zonal isolation technology, swellable packers and blow-out
preventers. The latest plastics technologies such as 3D-printing
(additive manufacturing) are being evaluated for emergency use on
rigs in remote locations. In addition there are roles for high performance
degradable polymers in temporary structures in fracking applications.
Gas Polymer Engineering Texas 2017 provided a networking
forum for materials engineers and expert researchers to share case studies,
learn from past experience and look to the future with the latest technologies.
