“Europe is in a fight,” in a world “in which dependencies are ruthlessly weaponised” – strong words from Ursula von der Leyen in her State of the Union speech on 10th September 2025.
And a good opportunity to provide an overview of the numerous policy initiatives announced during the first nine months of this year of relevance to circularity and the plastics recycling sector and, indeed, the plastics and wider industry landscape overall.
Amongst the barrage of negative headlines about the EU’s chemicals, plastics, and plastics recycling industries, it is encouraging to see that the EU’s latest policy documents recognise the strategic significance of recycling and secondary raw materials in an increasingly protectionist world.
